Golf Son Vida is the birthplace of golf on Mallorca — opened in 1964, the island’s first course, and still one of its most prestigious more than sixty years later. It sits within the Son Vida estate above Palma, one of the most exclusive residential areas in Europe, in the immediate shadow of a genuine 13th-century castle that has since become the five-star hotel bearing the same name.
Seve Ballesteros made history on this course in 1990. Sixty years after it opened, Son Vida still plays like the original template every other Mallorca course was measured against.
The course: what you are actually playing
An 18-hole, par-71 layout at 5,601 metres, originally designed by Fred Hawtree and sensitively redesigned in 2001 by Kurt Rossknecht to modernise playability while preserving the traditional character and historic routing. The front nine is hilly, uneven, and genuinely narrow — demanding straight, disciplined driving — before the back nine opens into wider, flatter fairways framed by mature trees. The course hosted the Balearic Open on the European Tour in both 1990 and 1994, with Seve Ballesteros among the players who competed on it.
The hole worth knowing
The par-5 18th, with a second shot played over water directly in front of the clubhouse, is the course’s signature closing test — a genuine temptation for the daring golfer who wants to finish with a flourish rather than play safe.
The resort: what families actually need
The Castillo Hotel Son Vida — a genuine 13th-century castle transformed into a five-star Luxury Collection, adults-only (16+) property in 1961 — sits directly on the course with 164 rooms and suites, most with views over the fairways to the Bay of Palma and the city beyond. An on-site spa (opened 2018), the Es Castell fine-dining restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows, and shuttle access to the estate’s two additional courses (Son Muntaner and Son Quint) round out the offering.
On-site hotel: which one and why
Castillo Hotel Son Vida is the only choice and a genuinely remarkable one — request a front-facing room for sea views over the golf course. Being adults-only, it’s worth noting this particular property suits a couple’s golf trip better than a family one; Son Muntaner or Son Quint, two minutes away within the same estate, offer alternative accommodation options for a family group.
Best time to go
April–June and September–October, though Mallorca’s mild climate keeps Son Vida genuinely playable across a wider window than mainland Spain, with the estate’s hillside elevation offering some relief from peak summer heat.
Getting there: the logistics reality
Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is roughly 20 minutes — genuinely convenient, and the estate itself is just 5 minutes from central Palma, making this one of the easier Balearic courses to combine with a broader Mallorca city trip.
What to wear: the Inesea style edit
Castle stone, warm ivory, Mallorcan sage — a heritage palette that acknowledges the estate’s genuine architectural history without competing with the castle’s own dramatic presence.
Three pieces worth packing
A Lanvin Blanc top in warm ivory — European heritage register appropriate for a genuine 13th-century castle estate.
A Peter Millar polo in castle stone — classic tailoring suited to the course’s traditional, tree-framed character.
Fair Liar accessories in Mallorcan sage — Korean precision fabric practical for the front nine’s genuinely demanding narrow fairways.
The honest family verdict
Who should book it
Couples wanting genuine castle-estate luxury alongside Mallorca’s founding golf course. History-minded golfers drawn to real European Tour pedigree.
Who might look elsewhere
Families should book Son Muntaner or Son Quint within the same Son Vida estate rather than the adults-only Castillo itself.
