The Italian Riviera is one of the most photographed coastlines in Europe and one of the least covered golf destinations in women’s editorial. These are related facts. No one is looking here. Which is exactly why Inesea is.

Liguria is a thin strip of Italy compressed between the Apennines and the Mediterranean — a region that never had room to sprawl and developed its own concentrated intensity as a result. The towns stack up the hillsides in vertical arrangements that have nothing to do with the horizontal logic of the rest of the Italian coastline. The olive trees are ancient. The fishing villages became Portofino and Cinque Terre. The casino town became Sanremo. The rail line from Nice runs the entire length of it without pausing for breath.

The golf courses here sit in the landscape with the same quality as everything else in Liguria — precisely positioned, small by resort standards, operating with the confidence of somewhere that has been doing this in its own register for long enough to have stopped caring whether anyone from outside the region has noticed. When to go April through June and September through October. Liguria runs mild year-round — the Apennines shelter the coast from the worst of the northern European winter. The shoulder seasons give the landscape its best quality: the olive trees in the Ligurian light, courses at peak conditioning, and the specific atmosphere of a coast that is still recognisably itself. If extending from Provence, the drive from Nice along the A8 and A10 takes three hours and deposits you in a completely different Italy.

Garlenda sits in the Arroscia valley behind Albenga, in the Ligurian hinterland that most visitors drive through without stopping. It is the most serious golf course in Liguria and has been since 1965. The conditioning is exceptional. The setting is not the Mediterranean but the Ligurian countryside that precedes it — which is a different and in some ways more interesting thing.
